Plan to get out your stimulus money and pay some big cash for the right boat. Since the technology, hull and boat types are relatively new you will not be able to buy a boat more than 10 years old that you can wakesurf behind with much success. Advances in just the past 5 years have really moved the sport forward. Hard shell ballast systems with pumps are a necessity and this is a new option that has only been around 5 or so year. You can't wakesurf without some form of ballast unless you weigh under 50 lbs.

Plan to dish out $50-$120K for a new boat or less for a used. In most cases, if you take care of your boat and spend the extra cash and buy a quality product your boat should and can last you for 10-20 years or more.

  • Inboard boat with at least 300HP.
  • Ballast system - not lead weight. True water ballast tanks either permanently installed or something that can be taken in and out of your boat. FatSacks or something similar are good, however, permanantly installed hard shell ballast tanks with pumps are by far the easiest and best method.
  • Another easy way to add ballast is pile in your crew, a bunch of Haitians, or your kids. It is also necessary to weight one side of the boat more heavily than the other. The side your rider prefers. Goofy to starboard, regular foot to port.
  • Tower or ski pylon
  • A boat designed for skiing, boarding and surfing. Don't try this behind an inboard cabin cruiser, yacht, etc.. these type of boat have a deep trough and many times actually suck water back into the transom directly in the middle of the boat.
  • Not a must have it is a beautiful thing to have some nice cranking tower speakers that direct the sound to the rider. Nothing better in life than to take a long surf set listening to your favorite tunes.
